Countless comments and condolences were verbalized to me during the funeral visitation for my mom. But one comment in particular struck me as a bit odd.
I can't even remember who it was that said the words, except that it was a female, and she spoke them as she embraced me.
Just four words came from her lips:
"Keep your head down."
The command struck me as odd because at such a time as that, I would've expected something more along the lines of, "Keep your chin up, kid."
No... this was 'keep your head down.'
As I've reflected upon these four words, I've come to appreciate their depth and their simplicity.
"Keep your head down." Just like when you're playing golf.
If you've taken your stance, selected club in hand, you sure as anything better keep your head down, or you're gonna shank the ball -- or worse, swing and miss entirely. Not that I can speak from experience, of course.
As in the game of golf, we've got to keep our head down as we play this game called life. So just as we fix our eyes on the ball, no, even more so, let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.
