eat your beans

The diversity that exists in the human race baffles me. Fascinates me, actually. Never mind the entire human race, even simply the diversity in personality and traits that exists at my dining room table as I eat supper with my family of five is remarkable.

This evening I set down five plates that were identical in content. I could do nothing but smile as I watched the three youngest of my dining companions go about tackling their portions.

Let me paint the picture for you. They each had a round bread roll with a chicken patty placed inside, two slices of cucumber next to it, and a portion of green beans to round off the plate.

The first kid takes his fork and proceeds to use it to spread mayonnaise on the patty that has already been spread with a knife.

The next kid moves the fork to the side of her plate and picks up the green beans one by one with her fingers, much like eating chips.

The third kid opens his green beans lengthwise with his fingers, pulls the individual beans from the pods, and places them gingerly inside his chicken burger.

Really?

Could three people possibly eat the same meal any differently?

Yet each approach speaks of their personalities, their quirks, their idiosyncrasies that are so intricately woven into their small frames.

To think that there can be such a vast array of thought-processing and problem-solving skills with just one plate of food speaks volumes to me of the creativity of our God.
