broken beauty

This is one of my favorite photographs of my mom, pictured here with her younger sister. Don't they both look beautiful? So happy, so full of life.

I love to look at it, yet it makes me so sad. It makes me sad because now, perhaps thirty-five years after this photo was taken, one of those beautiful women is absent in body, the other absent in mind. One of these sisters fell victim to cancer, the other to bipolar disorder.

It is easy to think of what once was. But we must not neglect to think of what will be.

The beauty that was captured thirty-five years ago has been restored, can be restored, will be restored.

For He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it.
