Jack and the Bible

I mentioned in my Fifty Things list that even though all of Jack Johnson’s songs sound the same, I still love his music. I also love listening to his lyrics and trying to find links (or contradictions) with his worldview and that of the Bible. Of course there are far better things I could be doing with my time, but, well...

Just take his song, “They do, they don’t,” for example (if you don‘t know the song, you might be able to catch it on Pandora or Jango, depending on which continent you‘re living on):

Tied down against the tracks (Ephesians 2:3)
Screaming in silent black and white
Why'd you trust us, we are such villians (Psalm 58:3)
We would tell ourselves anything
we want to hear if we're willing (2 Timothy 4:3-4)
To listen is to learn
Then too much is what we deserve

Chorus -
And how come when we say that we do
We don't (Romans 7)
Pray to anybody you want
We wont

But if we're the ones to blame then the fruit
Shouldn't taste so good (Genesis 3, James 1:13-15)
We were used
Used to thinking we got nothing to lose
We're losing everything but the truth (Romans 1:25, 28)
Is walking straight into a roadblock ending left here bending
Your point of view was chosen by the serpent's ruse (Genesis 3)

With all its do's and don'ts
The future is an empty promise
Unconcerned and so tired of waiting (Romans 8:18-25)
We could sell it wooden horses
full of nightmares and when they open
This all might recompose
There's no going back to the good 'ole days
It's just a phase, bring in some new life (Ephesians 4:22)
Archaism is a dusty road leading us back to nowhere

What did I miss?

  1. Try "If I Could." It seems so spiritual to me. But maybe that's just where I am in my life right now.
