What's in a name?

Initially, the reasoning behind the name was purely superficial. It is simply the reason that I write. I write to reflect and because it is therapeutic. But as I reflected on what each of these words mean and what they encompass, it occurred to me that perhaps there is scope for a little more depth than what was originally intended.

Reflection

After reflecting a bit upon the idea of reflection, I realized that there are many strands relating to reflection that are threaded throughout the Scriptures. To name a few:

  • We are called upon to reflect on our own hearts. We are to reflect upon our own sinfulness.
  • As we look in the mirror, we should see our reflection for what it is in the eyes of God, not according to the eyes of this world.
  • We were created in the image of God. We reflect (finitely) certain aspects of who He is in our creativity, our ability to love, our ability to reason, etc.
  • As Christians, we are the image-bearers of Christ. We are to reflect His light in a dark and fallen world. Our hearts and lives ought to reflect Christ in all that we do.
  • Marriage is a reflection of Christ’s relationship to His bride, the Church.
  • This earth is merely a reflection of what is to come. We are living in a shadow, a blurred image of the true reality, the perfect eternal kingdom that is yet to be revealed.
Therapy

Some people go to speech therapy, some to physical therapy. Some go to family therapy. Whatever type, the bottom line is that people go to therapy to better themselves. To make improvements, to find cures.

It is with this purpose in mind that I call this blog ‘reflection therapy’ -- to reflect upon God’s sovereign hand in my life, to reflect upon my ongoing war against sin, to reflect upon how I can more effectively shine the light of Christ in my life, and to reflect upon the promise of an eternity with my Creator, Sustainer, Savior and Lord. And I do this not merely for the sake of being reflective, but with the hope of bettering myself for His service. With the help of the Holy Spirit, my hope is that these reflections will aid in the ongoing process of sanctification. And for whomever happens upon these words, I hope they will be an encouragement to you to better yourself for the sake of Christ as you reflect upon His goodness and His grace.
